Heart surgery and procedures pump up in Illinois facilities

   Heart surgery, heart treatments and heart surgery preventative measures have made great strides in recent years. Hospitals and institutes have popped up that provide a full range of heart services, from diagnostics to interventional to surgery and implants.
  Dr. James T. Dove, president of Prairie Heart Institute at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, said the institute performs more cardiac procedures than any other facility in Illinois; he attributes this to the way the program was started - with an emphasis on high-quality services.
  Dove's specialty is general cardiology and diagnostic catheterization. He said cardiology is different than what it used to be.
